Have you ever thought of visiting the birthplace of Karate? Or perhaps you’re thinking that it’s time to go back?

GKR Karate has been organising regular trips to Japan since 2002, and we’re currently in the process of organising our 2018 trip, and you are invited!

Our last trip was in 2016 and we had over 70 instructors and students make the trip.

We’re organising the details of our trip as we speak, so the purpose of this post is to spark your interest and get the ball rolling, because the time to start planning and saving is now.

There are two sectors to this trip. Mainland Japan, and Okinawa. The main portion would be Okinawa.

JAPAN: AKITA CITY

On July 28th and 29th, Akita City is hosting the 2018 JKF GojuKai National Titles. As per usual, a number of our students will be entering. Beyond those competing, we often have many students come just to watch, to cheer them on and to be inspired by Japan’s Black Belts.

This Black Belt tournament has all age groups and the youngest competitors (6 and 7yrs who are not quite black belt yet) are just as incredible as the adults.

All rounds are on the Saturday 28th and Finals and Team events are on the Sunday 29th. We always have our famed Karaoke Party on the Sunday evening, where the majority of us dress up in Kimonos.

Most International flights into Japan land in either Osaka (two and half hours south of Tokyo by Bullet Train) or Tokyo. Tokyo is an extraordinary city, where Japan’s traditional and cultural values intersperse with incredibly modern technology and infrastructure. One could easily spend a few days in Tokyo alone. And between Tokyo and Osaka is Kyoto, the old capital, with its countless beautiful temples nestled in the hills and forests surrounding the small city.

Akita city is 4hours north of Tokyo (By bullet train). The train stops at sightseeing spots like Lake Tazawa (known for its clear water) and Kakunodate (a traditional samurai village).

OKINAWA: NAHA

After JKF Nationals, we would fly from mainland Japan into Naha, Okinawa. This would be either Monday the 30th of July or even Tuesday the 31st. Some of you may only be interested in the Okinawa sector of the trip, but if you are, your flight will stop in Mainland Japan, so you can always turn it into a free stopover and spend some time sightseeing there also.

Okinawa (which means ‘Rope in the Sea’) is a Chain of islands surrounded by blue waters and coral reefs. Lush jungles and pristine waterfalls are commonplace. But among this natural beauty, lays temples, castles, and of course, dojos rich in karate history, as Okinawa is the birthplace of karate and still houses the World’s most respected instructors.

Most of Okinawa’s karate history is in the small city of Naha. This is where we will stay and train for the majority of our time here.

Tournament: August 1st to August 5th is an International Tournament being held at Naha’s famous Budokan (an enormous three story Martial Arts building that is shaped to look like a Samurai helmet). We imagine many of you would like to go and watch this.

Training: We are currently organising 2-3 days of training. This would not only include training among the GKR group, but we’re also in the process of bringing some respected Okinawan masters to share their knowledge, especially in regards to the history and traditional ways kata (trained in GKR) was practiced and taught.

Seminars: Beyond our own organised training, August 6th and 7th will see some of Okinawa’s prominent masters run seminars. These are open to any age, grade and style.

Sightseeing: While nothing will be compulsory on the trip, we do like to give people options. For those interested, we are looking to organise a trip or two to some waterfalls and the nearby island of Zamami (a beach famous for snorkelling).

Bonding: Most evenings, the majority of GKR attendees can be found at the Dojo Bar. This specifically designed karate-themed bar (food and drinks) is for karate-ka around the World to meet and network. The owner is also a great resource for recommending dojos to visit and train at.

If this trip is sparking a genuine interest, be sure to let us know here, and additionally, let your Regional Manager know. We have set up a Facebook Group specific to the trip so we can add any instructors or students serious about joining us.
