The Ministry of Justice established the Japan Law Translation Council in 2009 in order to examine matters concerning infrastructure development to promote foreign language translations of Japanese laws and regulations. The council is made up of experts, officials from related government agencies and other stakeholders. The current chairman is our speaker, Professor Hirotomo Abe. 
About the Speaker:Professor Abe worked in the legal affairs area of a general trading company for 30 years and spent time overseas in Argentina, Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom. While working he received a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Tsukuba. His research topic concerned Brazilian company law. Since 2009 he has been teaching international business law and legal English at Hitotsubashi University. His focus is on training students in negotiation, including preparing students to participate at the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Conference organized by the International Chamber of Commerce. In 2011 he joined the Ministry of Justice’s Japanese Law Translation Council, serving as Chair since 2017. He also serves on the Reconstruction Agency’s External Bid Review Committee. His hobbies include tennis, travel, and drinking (in moderation).
